Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. | DGP Subodh Jaiswal |
CONCERNED by the declining numbers of preventive action against criminals in the state, Director General of Police (DGP) Subodh Jaiswal has ordered all police stations to prepare list of top ten criminals in their area and initiate stern preventive action against them.
Special Inspector General of Police (Special IGP) (Law and Order) Milind Bharambe issued the circular on behalf of DGP Jaiswal which criticised the police units for falling number of preventive action under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). “It was observed that action against the criminal elements under MPDA and MCOCA was reduced in the state. This shows that stern action was not initiated against slumlords, bootleggers, drug offenders and organised criminals,” the circular stated and warned that the matter was of grave concern and could lead to dangerous law and order situation in the State.
The DGP directed all police units to prepare list of top ten accused in body offences in the area of each police station and initiate stern preventive action against the goons under MPDA and MCOCA.
Special IGP Bharambe told The Hitavada that the directives were issued against the backdrop of upcoming Assembly elections. “Basic idea behind the circular was to motivate the staff to accelerate stern action against criminals to keep law and order situation under control,” he said.
