It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. A retired soldier of Indian Army was murdered by five persons including another retired Army soldier over land dispute at Bori Ghiwari village in Aroli Police Station area. Decomposed body of Bhaurao Meshram (46), a resident of Jhingabai Takali, Nagpur was found in a farm at Bori Ghiwari village where government had given him agriculture land. A sniffer dog of Dog squad of Rural Police helped the cops to detect the murder.
The accused have been Ashish alias Sonu Sejusingh Sengar (35), Santosh Sejusingh Sengar (43), both residents of Indora; Ramsingh Omkar Singh Gaherwar (64), a resident of Bori; Ganesh Bhaurao Gajam (26), a resident of Indrapuri; Vasudeo Urkuda Gajam (45), a resident of Bori.
A police officer informed that Meshram and Santosh Senger were retired from Indian Army. They both got an agriculture land at Bori Ghiwari village from the government. The Sengar family was indulged in the illegal excavation of murum in the area. Meshram objected them when they started excavation of murum from his agriculture land. The cops are suspecting that the accused had killed the Meshram over the dispute and thrown his body in an isolated place on May 10. The decomposed body was found on May 14 by the police. Acting on a tip-off, the police have arrested the accused and booked them under Sections 302, 201, 120 (b) and 34 of Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is on.
