A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

  Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Young girl to crushed death while overtaking a truck

Overtaking a truck in a haste claimed life of a young girl in Wadi area on Tuesday morning. The girl was crushed to death by a truck. 
Puja Omprakash Tiwari, (26), a resident of Navneet Nagar, Krishnanand Society, Wadi, was heading towards Nagpur on her Activa moped (MH-40/BB-1330) at 10.15 am. She was going to Ajmera Tyres where she was working. Puja was set to overtake a truck (MH-12/MV-4600) when she was passing through Wadi area. But when she was about to cross the truck, she lost her balance and came under its rear wheels. She was crushed and dragged by the truck for a distance before halting. A passersby claimed that her odni was entangled in the truck as a result she fell on the road and came under the wheels. However, the police have not confirmed the information given by the passersby. 
A large numbers of onlookers gathered at the spot and traffic movement was affected after the accident. Puja sustained multiple injuries in the accident and died on the spot. A police official said that the truck driver had applied brakes when she came under the wheels but it was late. She sustained major injuries on upper part of the body including head, the official said. Blood was oozing from her body after the accident. The official further claimed that the tragic incident occurred due to the heavy traffic on the road as she tried to overtake the truck in narrow space of the road.
The police have arrested the truck drier Shivlal Ramdas Shinde (30), a resident of Takalkhed village of Budhana district and booked him under Sections 279 and 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code.
