It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. An extra-marital affair is suspected to have led to murder of a woman allegedly by two women in Kalamna area on Saturday night. Investigation revealed that Puja alias Pinki Paresh Bakhariya (35), a resident of Plot No. 68, Kalamna, was allegedly having an affair with a chicken shop owner Bhojraj Boduje Sahare (34), a resident of Plot No. 175, Chikhli, Kalamna.
Bhojraj’s wife - Jyotsana (32) - learnt about the affair and determined to teach a lesson to Pinki with whom her husband was involved. Jyotsana and her mother Pramila Jain Tabhane (50), a resident of Kamal Chowk, went to meet Puja near Chikhli Chowk at around 11 pm. Jyotsana lost her cool on seeing Puja and picked up a quarrel with her.
In a fit of rage, Jyotsana took out a sharp-weapon and stabbed Puja on the stomach. After Puja collapsed on the ground, Jyotsana and Pramila fled the spot. Puja was lying on the ground for more than 20 minutes. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Puja’s husband Paresh Bakhariya (42) is working in a garment shop at Gandhibag. Before she was killed, Puja had came to the shop on a moped of her female friend and took Rs 5,000 from Bakhariya. The female friend had dropped her near Chikhli Chowk. Bakharia reportedly heard screams of Puja when she was killed by the assailants, police said.
Police Inspector Vishwanath Chavan said that the women and Bhojraj Sahare were arrested on the murder charges. As Bhojraj used to speak with Puja on mobile phone, Jyotsana grew suspicious on him which led to revelations of extra-marital affair, he said. An offence under Sections 302 and 34 of Indian Penal Code was registered at Kalamna Police Station.
