A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Bobby was missing since last four-days and his wife had reported the matter to Jaripatka Police Station. Even as cops were sitting tight, news came about finding of Bobby’s body that sent ripples through the City Police administration. Now, the cops are investigating the case on murder angle suspecting it to be a fall out of old-rivalry or a property dispute.
A passer-by noticed the body lying near a bridge and alerted the police in the morning hours. The spot is about five kms from the Nagpur-Amravati Highway. Staff of Kondhali Police Station rushed to the spot. As the police did not find anything at the spot to ascertain identity of the deceased, they sent pictures of the body to the city police which identified him as Bobby Sardar.  The police sent the body to GMCH for post-mortem.
Kondhali police have initially registered a case of accidental death and it is expected that murder case would be registered only after receiving advance post-mortem report as there were no visible injuries on the body.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ola informed that Bobby left his home on Thursday afternoon and failed to return. The family members approached Jaripatka Police and lodged a missing complaint. Sources informed that the Bobby's wife had revealed the name of a gangster suspecting latter could have abducted Bobby. However, Jaripatka Police took the matter lightly and did not try to go after the gangster named by Bobby's wife and chose to register missing case. The Innova car of Bobby was recovered by the police from Jaripatka area on Saturday.
After observing the swelled body, the police came to a conclusion that that he might have been eliminated 48 hours ago. “As there was no injury marks on his body, its difficult to ascertained reasons of death,” said SP Ola.  The Rural Police have started checking CCTV footages of the roads connecting to the spot.
Bobby was heading the firm DTC Transport and was having office at Automotive Chowk. He was also involved in property dealing, Kerosene business and sources said was also involved in cricket betting.  A police officer informed that the murder could be fall out of a dispute of a property situated in North Nagpur area.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Joint CP) Ravindra Kadam said that the case was treated as abduction case when Bobby’s wife approached the police. “The case was investigated from all possible angles,” he claimed.
