AI Joins the Force: Maharashtra Police Deploys ‘Crime-OS’ for Smarter Investigations

By Dheeraj Fartode  Imagine a police officer uploads an FIR and within seconds, an AI assistant begins planning the investigation. It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. Assistant Superitendent of Police (ASP) Deepak Agrawal explained that police investigations usually take a lot of time and effort. Missing Transporter Bobby Sardar's body found dead near Kondhali

In a suspected case of murder, a city transporter's semi-decomposed body was found under the jurisdiction of Kondhali Police Station on Sunday. The body of Bhupendra Singh Manjit Singh Makan alias Bobby Sardar (46), a resident of Dixit Nagar, was found in a nullah at Kathalabodi village.
Bobby was missing since last four-days and his wife had reported the matter to Jaripatka Police Station. Even as cops were sitting tight, news came about finding of Bobby’s body that sent ripples through the City Police administration. Now, the cops are investigating the case on murder angle suspecting it to be a fall out of old-rivalry or a property dispute.
A passer-by noticed the body lying near a bridge and alerted the police in the morning hours. The spot is about five kms from the Nagpur-Amravati Highway. Staff of Kondhali Police Station rushed to the spot. As the police did not find anything at the spot to ascertain identity of the deceased, they sent pictures of the body to the city police which identified him as Bobby Sardar.  The police sent the body to GMCH for post-mortem.
Kondhali police have initially registered a case of accidental death and it is expected that murder case would be registered only after receiving advance post-mortem report as there were no visible injuries on the body.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ola informed that Bobby left his home on Thursday afternoon and failed to return. The family members approached Jaripatka Police and lodged a missing complaint. Sources informed that the Bobby's wife had revealed the name of a gangster suspecting latter could have abducted Bobby. However, Jaripatka Police took the matter lightly and did not try to go after the gangster named by Bobby's wife and chose to register missing case. The Innova car of Bobby was recovered by the police from Jaripatka area on Saturday.
After observing the swelled body, the police came to a conclusion that that he might have been eliminated 48 hours ago. “As there was no injury marks on his body, its difficult to ascertained reasons of death,” said SP Ola.  The Rural Police have started checking CCTV footages of the roads connecting to the spot.
Bobby was heading the firm DTC Transport and was having office at Automotive Chowk. He was also involved in property dealing, Kerosene business and sources said was also involved in cricket betting.  A police officer informed that the murder could be fall out of a dispute of a property situated in North Nagpur area.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Joint CP) Ravindra Kadam said that the case was treated as abduction case when Bobby’s wife approached the police. “The case was investigated from all possible angles,” he claimed.

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
