Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...
Within 15-days of declaring ‘no parking zone’ in Dhantoli, Traffic Police have booked as many as 1,813 vehicle-riders/drivers for violating traffic rules under Motor Vehicles Act. Of these, 1,029 have been booked for parking vehicle in ‘no parking zone’, 685 for violation of one-way traffic rule, and 99 for other violations.
Senior Police Inspector (Traffic) Jayesh Bhandarkar informed that a team of Traffic Police was deployed in Dhantoli to book violators of traffic rules. Local residents are happy with the police action as they have got relief from unauthorised parking, traffic jam, and noise pollution that had become regular features in Dhantoli. Cases of violation of traffic rules are decreasing gradually in Dhantoli area as citizens are becoming aware about the new rules, he said.
City Police had issued a notification last month and created 18 ‘no parking zones’ and specified three lanes for one-way movement of traffic in Dhantoli to regulate the chaotic traffic. Now, the cops are planning to effect change in movement of traffic in Ramdaspeth, Sitabuldi, Gandhibag, and Mahal areas of the city.
Along with tough measures, Traffic Police are also counseling people, guiding them on directions to take for reaching their destination to avoid inconvenience to them. Dhantoli is a medical hub and a large number of people coming there are outsiders, and hence the cops are counseling and guiding the people. Another police officer said that other lanes in Dhantoli would also be converted into one-ways after observing success of the drive and response of the residents.
A police team will take stock of availability of parking space in all hospitals in Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth areas and initiate necessary action. “We will not allow parking of business houses on roads and footpaths. If anyone uses the parking place for other purposes then joint team of police and NMC will take action,” the officer warned.
