It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Special Branch (SB) Nilesh Bharne raided two hookah parlours in Sitabudli and Sadar Police Station area and seized hookah on wee hours of Friday. Three persons were arrested by the police and later released on bail. Acting on a tip-off, DCP Bharne, who was on night-round, conducted first raid at Hub Cafe at Achraj Tower in Sadar at 1.30 am. The cops noticed a group of youngsters allegedly indulge in hookah smoking. The cops immediately seized the equipment and hookah from the spot and took the manager in custody. The manager was identified as Ritesh Diwaji Uike (34), a resident of Bayramji Town.
Later, DCP Bharne conducted raid at Lahori Deluxe Bar at West High-Court Road at around 2 am where cops noticed that many youngsters drinking liquor late night and smoking hookah. The police seized hookah from the Bar and took two persons in custody. A police officer informed that the bar owner had all set to launch a hookah parlour -- Roof 9 -- in the same building. It may be mentioned that the Lahori Deluxe Bar was always in news for illegal activities. The Bar owner was booked in firing case last year. Arrested persons including a supervisor identified as Suresh Jagdish Vaichraj (35), a resident of Aarohi Apartment, Ravi Nagar and Rakesh Gulabrao Tambutwar (25), a resident of Pipala, Koradi road.
A police officer informed that more persons would be booked in the case for running illegal activities after investigation. Sitabuldi and Sadar police have registered an offence under Sections 4 of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, (COTPA) 2003 read with sub-sections of Bombay Police Act.
