It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. After initiating action against land mafia across the city, the Property Cell is now spreading its dragnet on Government officials who allegedly colluded with land grabbers and abetted commitment of land frauds through preparation and approval of fabricated documents. The cell have booked seven persons including three officials from Land and Revenue Department, who allegedly facilitated registration of nine acres of prime land registered in name of a city based top contractor and one other, on the basis of fake documents.
Among those booked are Omprakash Gokuldas Bajaj, a resident of Plot No 155, Bank Colony, Jaripatka; he is one of the big contractor; Sukhdev Premchand Bhagchandani, a resident of Hathi building, Jaripatka; Jaiprakash Gokuldas Bajaj; Suresh Gokuldas Bajaj, the then Sub-registrar, Nagpur No. 3; Talathi (Nara) and Circle Officer (Sitabuldi).
According to police, Roshan Jodhani (41), a resident of Jaripatka; Tikamdas Motwani, Omprakash Bajaj, Sukhdev Bhagchandani, Prakash Asudani had floated a company -- M/s Zhulelal Developers and purchased nine acres land at Mauja Nara. The Developers got sale deed registered at office of Sub-registrar No 5 in year February, 2000.
Later, relatives of the owner of the land -- Ushabai Lala Jaiswal and others approached Civil Court in April 2000 and the court ordered ‘Status Quo’ in year 2006.
The police said, Omprakash Gokuldas Bajaj and Sukhdev Bhagchandani prepared fake papers of power of attorney in the names of Jodhani, Motwani and Aasudani. Later, Omprakash Bajaj registered a deal about selling the said piece of land to his brother -- Suresh Gokuldas Bajaj on January 14, 2015 and the sale deed was registered at office of sub-registrar no 3.
After examining the documents, the Property Cell officers discovered the fraud in the land deal and involvement of Government officers. The police registered the case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 34 of Indian Penal Code.
