It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. NAGPUR City Police secured first-ever conviction under Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 with Additional Sessions Judge sentencing Ajay Shalikram Gajbhiye (40) to nine years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for uploading obscene video clippings of a young college girl by preparing her fake ID on a social networking site.
A resident of Vaishnav Devi Nagar, Kamptee Road, Gajbhiye was also sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment for the offence under Section 328 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), six months imprisonment for the offence under Section 354 of IPC, one year each for Section 66(c), 66(d), 66(e) and 67(a) of the IT Act. The total fine imposed on Gajbhiye was of Rs 17000/-. If he failed to pay the fine, he will have to under go additional imprisonment.
According to prosecution, the 26-year-old girl was studying in a college in MIDC area. Between January 2010 and January 26, 2012, Gajbhiye befriended. After developing intimacy with the girl, Gajbhiye took her to a hotel. He offered her cold drink mixed with some sedative. When she felt drowsy, he removed clothes and prepared her obscene video clipping. After taking her into confidence, Gajbhiye procured password of her Facebook account and uploaded the video clipping. When she came to know about the video clipping, she deactivated her Facebook account immediately. Gajbhiye then created her fake account on Facebook and again uploaded the obscene clipping on it.
Finally, the girl lodged a complaint with the police. On the basis of the complaint, MIDC Police arrested on charges under Sections 328, 354, 294 of the IPC read with Sections 66(a),66(k), 66(d), 66(I) and 67(a) of the IT Act.
Police Inspector (II) B N Gore investigated the case and collected concrete evidence against Gajbhiye. He then chargesheeted him. As the charges were substantiated against Gajbhiye, the court sentenced him to nine years RI under Section 66(a) of the IT Act. The court also convicted gajbhiye for other offences and imposed the fine.
