Fancy number plate in Maharashtra |
Recently, Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court ordered RTO and Nagpur City Traffic Police to start action against vehicles having fancy number plates. Regional Transport Officer stated that the action would be initiated from Wednesday against all such vehicles.
It may be mentioned that vehicle owners are using fancy number plates on their four wheeler violating rule 50 of Motor Vehicle Act. The action will be taken against these vehicles under rule 39 of MVA and vehicle would be seized for their serious violation under rule 207 of the MVA. The vehicle owners will have to produce number plates according to the rule and then the vehicles will make free from the action. RTO has prepared a plan in consulation with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and RTO, Nagpur City and Rural.
High Court’s directives came during a hearing on Satpal Singh Renu’s plea, where he pointed out that the use of fancy number plates is a blatant violation of Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988, and Rules 1989.
Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court ordered Regional Transport Office (RTO) and Nagpur city traffic police to start detaining vehicles with fancy number plates. The High Court had expressed strong displeasure earlier too over the Government’s apathy on hiking the fine amount againt violators, particularly repeat offenders.
Earlier, the Traffic Police took action against violation of MVA. However, the action has failed to deter the violators since the enforcement agencies impose Rs 100 fine and leave the illegal fancy number plate on the vehicle itself. Therefore, the RTO will seize the vehicles having fancy number plates and will release after correction.
RTO will also take action against Auto Rickshaws for carrying commuters illegally. Nagpur Bench of High Court had directed RTO and Nagpur Police to take action against six seaters auto-rickshaw and illegally carrying commuters in their auto-rickshaws. The action will be taken from March 2, against all such auto-rickshaws in the city. The RTO will cancel the registration of the auto-rickshaw for breaking norms and vehicle will be scrapped completely. The RTO urged Auto-rickshaw pullers to follow the rules of MVA otherwise they have to face stringent action from the adminsitration. The action will be taken by RTO, Nagpur Police Traffic and Rural Traffic jointly from Wednesday.
