Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. SENSATION prevailed in Sakkardara area after a history-sheeter was brutally done death by his victims at Budhwar Bazar near Kamla Nehru College in full public view on Friday afternoon.
After stabbing Ashish Sanjay Raut (26) with sharp-edged weapons, the assailants smashed his face with stones. His body was lying in the middle of the road when cops arrived at the spot.
A resident of Juni Somwaripeth, Ashish Raut allegedly used to take ‘hafta’ from vegetable vendors and petty traders in the area. Two days ago, he had thrashed some persons in the market. Fed-up of constant torture by Raut, they decided to eliminate him.
In the afternoon, Raut consumed liquor and forcibly took Avenger motorcycle (MH-49/AC 1369) of a tea stall owner. He then came to Budhwar Bazar. His victims, who were waiting for an opportunity, suddenly attacked him. After Raut fell down, they stabbed him with sharp-edged weapons. Before fleeing, they smashed his face with stones killing him on the spot.
Staff from Sakkardara Police Station led by senior Inspector H P Mulani arrived at the spot on being informed. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) G Sreedhar and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sakkardara Division) R R Kapgate also visited the spot to supervise investigations. After conducting the spot panchnama, cops sent the body to Government Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem.
Involved several offences of serious nature, including two murders, Raut was externed from the city. A few months ago, his externment order had expired.
Senior Inspector Mulani, in-charge of Sakkardara Police Station told ‘The Hitavada’ that two accused, including one Shankar Shirpurkar, have been taken into custody. Search for other accused in the case is on. An offence under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused persons.
