Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Investigation of the multi-crore ‘Dabba’ trading scam is going to be most expensive investigation for Nagpur police. After learning cost of various equipments and receiving first bill of cloning of computer hard disks worth Rs 2.5 lakh, the city police is all set to send a proposal for ‘extra’ investigation fund worth Rs 25 lakh which will be exclusively spend on investigation of ‘Dabba’ trading scam. ‘Dabba’ trading has inflicted heavy revenue loss worth crores to the state exchequer, experts claim.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (EoW) Ranjan Kumar Sharma told The Hitavada that cloning and securing 64 digit hash value of all seized hard disk and DVR is the first part of investigation so that the seized evidence could be produced in the court to prove guilt of the accused. The cops will purchase same sophisticated hard disks and DVR for cloning and it needs Rs 16-17 lakh, said DCP Sharma. “The city police have prepared the proposal and it would be sent to Director General of Police (DGP’s) office next week,” he informed.
Sources informed that Nagpur police received Rs 50 lakh as investigation fund last year. Then Director General of Police (DGP) Sajeev Dayal had started the scheme to update the investigating machinery and arm them with latest gadgets.
It may be mentioned that city police have seized more than hundreds of hard disks, and servers from L7 group and other accused allegedly indulged in ‘Dabba’ trading. The hard disks are substantial evidence for the police hence cops are giving utmost importance to it.
Sources in EoW informed that Ravi Agrawal had also stored data of ‘Dabba’ trading in icloud, which is a cloud storage and cloud computing service from tech giant Apple. This would be the difficult task for the EoW Nagpur as Apple had earlier refused to share data with USA’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack citing privacy of customers.

Provide medical treatment to Laddhad
Sessions Judge P V Ganediwala on Monday ordered Superintendent of Jail to provide medical treatment to accused Kushal Kishore Laddhad at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Defence lawayer Adv Atul Pande moved an application before the court stating that Laddhad was suffering from Ulcer and was not getting proper treatment at Central Jail. After hearing the plea, the court issued the order.
Hello Sir, I have been following the Dabba scam and am aware that the accused who were arrested have been in the jail for nearly 2 months. My question is will the absconding accused also face the same trial? Or will they easily get bail as one absconder got interim bail on medical ground stating that she has been diagnosed with cancer? I have full faith in our judiciary and know that justice will definitely happen but my concern, as a citizen, is if absconding people get bail easily on medical grounds, it will encourage people to do crime, abscond and come back appealing for bail ! Are cancer patients allowed to do any sort of crime and get bail so easily ? Really ?
