Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Now, police to sell water in city! Sounds baffling, but the idea has taken shape and an Rs. 35 lakh bottling plant is in offing at office of Commissioner of Police. A water purification plant having capacity of 1.20 lakh litres per day is planned that will cater to requirement of commissionerate.
The plan is to supply water to all police station, offices of senior officers and other units of city police through the central bottling plant. The Commisionerate has sent the proposal for approval to office of Director General of Police, Maharashtra.
The idea is said to be brainchild of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Detection) Ranjan Kumar Sharma. DCP Sharma told The Hitavada, all police establishment including Police Stations, Offices of ACPs, DCPs, Addl CPs and all branches would receive purified water directly from Nagpur Police Commissionerate office. The CP office would charge merely Rs 5 for each 35 litres can whereas market price for the same is Rs 30 to Rs 35. Thus this scheme entails savings for the police establishment, plus ensuring that quality water is served to police personnel.
Nagpur City police is spending Rs five lakh every year to get purified water. If the new idea is implemented ,then City police would earn lakhs of rupees with a one time investment, DCP Sharma explained while sharing the idea.
Earlier, Sharma during his stint as Commandant of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF Group IV), based at Hingna, had piloted a similar scheme. He had implemented the idea in the SRPF after around 30 % policemen had gone on sick leave due to water borne diseases.
Officials informed that Commissioner of Police Sharda Prasad Yadav have approved the proposal and sent the file with his remarks to the DG Office as funds would be drown from Police Welfare Fund.
