A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

NIMZ Kuhi Project: MIDC wants special land acquisition officer now

NIMZ at Kuhi

By Dheeraj Fartode

After getting approval from High Power Committee (HPC) for ambitious National Investement and Infrastructure Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) at Kuhi, District administration and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have moved a proposal to appoint a Deputy Collector rank officer and supporting staff to acquire land required for the important project.
Regional Officer of MIDC Vijay Bhakre told ‘The Hitavada’ that the HPC have given its nod in Mach 2013 for the project. “We have sent a proposal last month to state government for appointment of Deputy Collector, Tehsildar and other staff specially for land acquisition for NIMZ.” As the land acquisition is critical process and it can delay the project if special officer is not appointed for it, he said. “Actual land acquisition will start after state government gives its nod for section 6 of Land Acquisition,” he added.
According to old-timers, for Butibori MIDC and MIHAN, the land acquisition posed a major problem which delayed the ventures and precious time was lost.
Bhakre further said that MIDC, Headquarters has given approval for land acquisition of 3,816 acres land in Kuhi and Umrer tehsils for the Phase-I of the proposed project. Forest, irrigation, mining, town planning, Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), Environment and other departments have given their no objection certificate (NOC) for the project, he added.
MIDC has identified 9 villages from Kuhi tehsil and one village from Umrer tehsil for second phase. The corporation will acquire 2,316 acre land including 71 acre government’s land in Phase-II, he said. In all, NIMZ will require 6066.45 hectares land spread over 24 villages of which 20 are in Kuhi while four are in Umrer tehsil.
NIMZ are being set up at 8 centers throughout the country, which are expected to boost economic growth as well manufacturing units. NIMZ is being projected as a major catalyst for the region’s growth. However, even as two such zones have been notified in the state, the government has granted ‘in principle’ approval to Kuhi project. As per the government’s rule, NIMZ project requires minimum 5,500 acres of land. When acquisition will begin for the said site, Maharashtra Government will notify to the Central which will talk with international companies for establishing industrial units at NIMZ.

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
