It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. Reach of passengers does matter in the Indian Railway. Sample this, on Thursday, entire top brass of Nagpur Division of Central Railway landed at railway station to attend to a complaint of a woman traveller. The passengers, S David, a practicing lady lawyer at Supreme Court, got irked on noticing cockroaches in the AC-II bogie. She also complained to Ticket Conductor about absence of curtains and wanted complaint register which she did not get.An infuriated David contacted a top official at the Railway Board and that worked wonder. Within moments entire railway machinery was put on high alert as DRM Brijesh Dixit himself marshalled the resources to rectify the complaint and pacify the big shot complainant.
Along with DRM, even Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) and other senior officials dashed to railway station. The woman was traveling in B-1 coach of 12622 New-Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express.
The train was first stopped at Amla station where short cleaning process was done at the station. When the train arrived at Nagpur station at around 2.15 pm, senior railway officials personally oversaw cleaning process. The top brass was in full attendance at platform no. 2 at railway station. Large number of staff from Railway Protection Force (RFP) and Government Railway Police (GRP) was also deployed at the platform. Hundreds of passengers standing on Foot Over Bridge (FoB) watched the drama unfolding before them intensely, as they though some Minister is coming.
As soon as the train was admitted on the platform an army of sanitation workers thoroughly cleaned the particular B-1 coach and brand new curtains were promptly attached in the coach. The train was detained at Nagpur station for 25 minutes. A senior official even accompanied the train till the next station to ensure nothing goes wrong during the journey, the sources said. Division PRO P D Patil said it was a routine matter and not any major problem.
