Maharashtra Police awaits governments nod for minor shuffle in top ranks

By Dheeraj Fartode

Democratic Front government is deliberating on major changes in the top echelons of Maharashtra Police, that includes filling-up of vacancies by way of promotions from Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) to Director General of Police (DGP). Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) has cleared the promotion list and same is at Mantralay awaiting clearance from coalition partners, said the top officials.
The ball would be set rolling as and when Mumbai’s Commissioner of Police, Dr. Satyapal Singh, who belongs to 1980 batch of Indian Police Service (IPS) is elevated. Right now the post of DG (Home Guards) is vacant but sources said as Dr. Singh’s is yet to complete a year he is not very eager to move-up in rank though he is due for promotion ever since DGP (Home Guards) Sridevi Goyal superannuated.
To succeed Dr. Singh, there are two strong contenders and they are Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Javed Ahmed, currently working in Mumbai Police Commissionerate, and the other name is that of Thane Commissioner of Police K P Raghuwanshi. Two other names are also being discussed in police circle that of ADG (Traffic) V R Kamble and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Rakesh Maria.
Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Dayal told ‘The Hitavada’ that Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) have sanctioned promotions of senior officers in their meeting held last month and we are waiting for approval of State Government.
Sources informed that three ADGP’s posts including ADG (Administration), ADG (Anti-Corruption Bureau) and ADG (Railways) are vacant for past one year. IPS’s 1987 batch officers including Spl. Inspector General (IGP) Coastal Security S N Pandey, Spl. IGP Crime (East and West) CID D Kanakratnam are tipped to get promoted as ADG. DIG (Passport) Vikram Choubey and DIG Amitesh Kumar (Additional CP ATS) names have been cleared for promotion as Special Inspector General of Police (IGP).
There are strong possibilities of promotion to DIG of 1999 IPS batch officers Deepak Pandey (SP Ratnagiri), Kiran Shelar (Mumbai Commissionerate), Nanded SP Vitthal Jadhav, P S Patankar.

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
