Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. The protest was launched on Tuesday afternoon in presence of BJP state general Secretary and MLA Devendra Fadanvis and MLA Nana Patole. Mayor Anil Sole, Former MP Banwarilal Purohit, MLAs Sudhakar Deshmukh, Krishna Khopde, Vikas Kumbhare were prominently present on the dais. Addressing students MLA Fadanvis lashed at the state government for not disbursing scholarship to OBC and VJ/NT students.
Many OBC and VJ/NT students have been forced to quit the course by the private college authorities after scholarship amount was not disbursed by the government during last two academic sessions. Total Rs 1,400 crore are yet to disbursed to students, Fadanvis added. Scholarship is our right and government is trying to terminate our right, he claimed.
Fadanvis alleged that the ministers say that centre has not released the funds and hence they are not providing the same to the students. This happened with other States as well but, other States paid from their own kitty and then claimed reimbursement, Fadanvis added.
Nana Patole said that education is our right and scholarship is basic need for OBC and VJNT. Non Creamy Layer has been created by the government to disturb peace between SC, ST, OBC and VJNT. Patole demanded for increase in income limit of non creamy layer level upto Rs 7 lakh and informed that agitation on same lines will continue at Bhandara, Gondia and Gandhichori. Government is befooling us by passing buck to Centre, Patole alleged.
MLA Sudhakar Deshmukh said we want our basic right and not against anyone. Government should give promotion to OBC in government sector, Deshmukh demanded. MLA Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Krishna Khopde, Vikas Kumbhare and Mayor Anil Sole urged OBC and VJNT students, who are facing problems due to lack of disbursement of scholarship, to participate in the agitation.
Deputy Mayor Sandip Jadhav, former Mayor Archana Dehankar, Pravin Datke, BJYM President Bunty Kukde, Deven Dasture, Chhotu Bhoyar, Pramod Pendke, Prabhakar Yewle, Shivani Dani and others were present on the dais. The protest will continue on Wednesday.
